ISLAMABAD: Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) John P. Abizaid on Tuesday called on Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and exchanged views on regional and international geo-strategic situation with particular reference to Afghanistan. Gen. Abizaid's official visit assumes importance in view of the stepped up Al-Qaeda and Taliban operations in Afghanistan and the tussle between Pakistan security forces and suspected foreign militants in the tribal belt bordering Afghanistan. Three days ago, security forces claimed to have killed 17 foreign militants including women and children in an operation in the North Waziristan Tribal Agency. Last week, the American forces are believed to have crossed over into Pakistan territory and killed 24 suspected foreign militants. A statement by the Pakistan Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said Gen. Musharraf had expressed the hope that Gen. Abizaid's visit would help enhance the cooperation between the Armed Forces of both countries. Gen. Abizaid also visited the General Headquarters and met Vice-Chief of Army Staff, Ahsan Saleem Hyat.
