MOSCOW: Fifteen persons were killed and over 30 were wounded in a rebel attack on police in Chechnya on Tuesday. Unidentified attackers first opened fire on a police jeep in a small town in Chechnya killing one policeman. When more police arrived in another vehicle to investigate the incident the rebels set off a powerful bomb that killed more policemen and some civilians. It is the biggest rebel attack in the region since the seizure of a school in North Ossetia last September, in which over 300 children and adults died. The attack took place in northern Chechnya, which has been little affected by the 10-year-war since its population has been loyal to Russia. This reflects the rebel tactics of trying to spread violence. Earlier this month, 12 Russian soldiers were killed in Dagestan when a bomb ripped through a military truck.
