Hari inches closer to title

NEW DELHI: World junior champion P. Hari Krishna moved closer to the biggest title of his career when he drew with China's Ni Hua in the 10th and penultimate round of the Taiyuan Grandmaster chess tournament for the Sanjin Cup at Taiyuan, China, on Tuesday.

The short draw, in just 19 moves of Slav Defence exchange variation, took Hari's tally to eight points. Hari, who is still half-a-point ahead of nearest challenger Russia's Alexander Motylev, needs at least draw against Ukraine's Sergey Karjakin in the final round to make sure of the title.

Motylev, after his drawn 35-move Queen's Indian encounter with China's Wang Yue, will be looking to beat China's Bu Xiangzhi to keep alive his chances of catching up with Hari.

On a day when Karjakin and Bu Xiangzhi suffered defeats, Chinese tailender Zhao Xue and Briton Luke McShane produced a marathon 132-move draw.

The results (10th round): Ni Hua (Chn, 5.5) drew with P. Hari Krishna (Ind, 8); Wang Yue (Chn, 5.5) drew with Alexander Motylev (Rus, 7.5); Bu Xiangzhi (Chn, 5.5) lost to Tigran Petrosian (Arm, 5); Sergey Karjakin (Ukr, 5) lost to Wang Hao (Chn, 4.5); Zhao Xue (Chn, 2.5) drew with Luke McShane (Eng, 3); Zhang Pengxiang (Chn, 4) drew with Zhang Zhong (Chn, 4).
