Mountain bike National meet from tomorrow

Hyderabad: About 600 cyclists will take part in the 6th mountain bike National championships, which will be held at the Osmania University campus from July 21 to 24. TI Cycles will sponsor the event under the band name of Hercules Turbodrive.

Releasing the details at a press conference on Tuesday, Mr. J.S. Grewal, General Secretary of the Cycling Federation of India said there would be dope testing during the event. Samples will be collected in Hyderabad and sent to Delhi for testing. He said that the CFI was doing its best to stamp out doping in the sport. Most organisations were taking great care to ensure that their participants were drug free but he said that Railways should do more to check its riders.

Mr. Grewal thanked TI Cycles for coming forward to sponsor cycling events in a big way and felt that the sport was gaining in popularity since it was environment friendly.

Maxwell Trevor, Secretary of the AP Cycling Association said that the 7.25-km course has been laid with great care to conform to international specifications. Seventy-six percent of the course will be on mud tracks and 24 percent will be on blacktop.

Events will be conducted for four age categories: under-14, 16 and 18 and men and women. Inspection of the course, training session and managers' meeting will be conducted on Wednesday and the competitions will get underway on Thursday morning. — Special Correspondent
