Preparatory camp inaugurated

HYDERABAD: : The second phase of the Indian preparatory camp for the inaugural Rajiv Gandhi international gymnastics championship for men and women, to be held at Saroornagar Stadium here from August 18 to21, was inaugurated here on Tuesday.

L. Venkatram Reddy, secretary of AP Olympic Association, wished the probables best of luck for the big event, which is considered to be a warm-up event for the Asian championship to be held in June 2006 in Surat.

The women are training in Kolkata and the 15-member men's team is preparing here under the guidance of chief coach A.V. Giriraj.

Meanwhile, it was learnt that Chinese Taipei, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Syria, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Iran, Uzbekistan and Japan have confirmed participation for the event. India will field two teams.

Some of the big names in the camp include Shinoj, silver medallist in the South Central Asian championship early this year, Raja Roy and Ramesh Behra. The two local boys in the camp are Sarat Chandra and Shiva Kumar.

Competitions in the Rajiv Gandhi meet include floor, pommel, Roman rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bars. The final team for the meet will be announced on August 15.
