GUNTUR: The Department of Cooperatives will prepare a master plan for securing funding for Self Help Groups to help the poor begin revenue-generating activity after the elections to the cooperatives are over. The Minister for Cooperation, Kanna Lakshminarayana, told reporters on Tuesday after his return from the United States that the elections were on schedule and efforts were on to revive some of the sinking cooperatives to benefit farmers. He advised the media to report in a more responsible way to benefit the farming community at large instead of sensationalising everything and seeing a scam in everything.
Indirect elections
The elections would be held indirectly. The GO 223 was issued on June 23 to this effect and individual District Cooperative Officers have been notified of it. All the societies covered under the 1964 Act would go to polls and under the new provisions any member seeking voting right had to become a member of the Primary Agriculture Cooperative Society by paying Rs. 300 share capital. The membership must be more than a month old by the time the elections were notified by the returning officers, he said.
