Two jawans killed as gun goes off

HYDERABAD: Two Army jawans were killed at a firing range in the military area near Ponnal village under Shameerpet police station limits on the city outskirts on Tuesday. The incident occurred when a gun went off accidentally during a practice session, according to the police. - Special Correspondent

BJP meet at Nellore

HYDERABAD: The BJP State Executive meeting will be held as scheduled at Nellore on July 30 and 31, the party president, N.Indrasena Reddy, said here on Tuesday. He told reporters that the BJP vice-president, M.Venkaiah Naidu, the organising secretary, Soudan Singh, the incharge of AP affairs, Bal Apte, and theformer president, Bangaru Laxman, among others, would address the executive.

He said the party had decided to remove the former Kisan Morcha leader, N.Venugopala Reddy, from primary membership for indulging in "anti-party" activities. - Special Correspondent

Private colleges

asked to enforce EPF

HYDERABAD: Authorities of the Employees' Provident Fund in Delhi recently informed the AP Affiliated Private Engineering Colleges Non-teaching Staff Federation that instructions had been issued to implement the EPF scheme for eligible staff.

C. Bhagat Simha, secretary-general, said in a statement on Tuesday that most of the 240 private engineering colleges in the State, with 15,000 non-teaching staff, were not enforcing the scheme. Hence it had represented the matter to the authorities. The managements could approach the federation if they faced any problem or difficulty in enforcing it, he said.- Staff Reporter

Woman set afire

VIZIANAGARAM: S. Uma Maheswari (35), a housewife in Dasannapeta, was torched allegedly by her husband, S. Venkata Rao, at 11 p.m. on Monday.

The woman suffered 80 per cent burns and was admitted to the district headquarters hospital where her condition was stated to be critical, according to the II town Sub-Inspector, E. Narasimha Murty. Suspicion over her character was said to be the reason for the act, he added. The man was arrested. - Correspondent

Awarded lifer

ADILABAD: The Adilabad Second Additional Sessions Judge, K.V. Vijay Kumar, on Tuesday sentenced to life imprisonment, Sirumalla Bhumesh (22), of Boath for killing his wife, Radha alias Laxmi, for dowry. According to the prosecution, Bhumesh and his father, Chinnaiah (who died during the course of trial), had doused Radha with kerosene and set her afire on February 25, 2001. - Staff Reporter

Rain at some places

HYDERABAD: There was rain at a few places in Rayalaseema on Tuesday. Parts of coastal Andhra received isolated falls.

Nagarjunasagar received rainfall of 5 cm; Cuddapah, Podili, Proddatur 4 cm each; Nizamabad, Macherla 3 cm each; and Nandyal, Allagadda each 2 cm.

The State Met Office forecast that light to moderate rain was likely on Wednesday at a few places in Telangana and Rayalaseema and in the districts of Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and Nellore.

There will be isolated falls in the rest of the State. - Special Correspondent

Ex gratia enhanced

HYDERABAD: The Government has enhanced the ex gratia from Rs. 1 lakh to Rs.1.3 lakhs in case of "permanent incapacitation" and from Rs.50,000 to Rs.65,000 for those who are grievously injured in extremist violence in respect of civilians and non-officials.

According to an official release, the enhancement was recommended by the high-power Cabinet sub-committee dealing with naxalite problems in the State. - Special Correspondent

21 cr. sanctioned for

development works

KURNOOL: The Government has sanctioned Rs 21 crores for various development works in Kurnool district. An amount of Rs 10.24 crores was sanctioned for development of municipal roads with the assistance of HUDCO.

Also, an amount of Rs 2.5 crores was sanctioned for a bridge across the Kundu river and Rs 6.25 crores for fulfilling the assurances given by the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, during his visit to the district.

Safety structures would be built on the highways to avoid road accidents at a cost of Rs 2 crores. - Staff Reporter

Effigy burnt

TIRUPATI: Functionaries of the CPI and its farmers' wing, Rythu Sangham, on Monday burnt an effigy of "vested interests", seeking revival of the Chittoor Co-op dairy.

The leaders lashed out at the "vested interests" in the district Congress for allegedly sabotaging the revival and said that the farmers of the district would not take lightly the volte face by the Rajasekhara Reddy Government on the issue. - Special Correspondent

Supply of pesticides

Nellore: Authorities of the Integrated Co-operative Development Project (ICDP) have made the necessary arrangements for supply of fertilisers and pesticides to agriculturists during kharif season.

A meeting was convened here on Wednesday on the District Central Co-operative Bank premises to discuss the formalities. Representatives of Markfed, IFFCO and KRIBCO would also be present. - Staff Reporter

seek minimum wages

CUDDAPAH: Medical representatives staged dharna before the office of the Assistant Commissioner of Labour demanding implementation of minimum wages, and extension of other benefits such as bonus, PF and gratuity.

The A.P. Medical and Sales Representatives Association district president, C.K. Babu, and the vice-president, V.V.S. Krishna, demanded that the Labour Department officials ensure implementation of labour laws. Those meeting with accidents should be granted compensation, they said. - Staff Reporter

Grant-in-aid

CUDDAPAH: The district Collector, G. Ashok Kumar, on Tuesday invited applications from voluntary organisations for sanction of Central grant-in-aid for erecting national leaders' statues and their maintenance. The Central Department of Culture would sanction Rs. 5 lakhs for each national symbol, he said in a statement. Applications could be forwarded to him and the State Director of Cultural Affairs, he said. - Staff Reporter

Model village for displaced

ELURU: The Collector, Lav Agarval, on Tuesday said the administration was contemplating establishment of model villages for those displaced by the Indira Sagar Project at Polavaram. Participating in a public hearing on rehabilitation of the project affected persons at Polavaram, the Collector said the model villages were proposed for the inhabitants of Mamidigondi, Totagondi, Deveragondi, Ramayyapet, Chegondipalli and Pidipaka located in and round the project headworks. - Staff Reporter

TDP rally against Botcha

Rajahmundry: The city unit of the Telugu Desam Party held a massive rally on Tuesday demanding removal of Botcha Satyanarayana, who was allegedly involved in Volkswagen scam, from the Cabinet.

The rally started off from Kotipalli bus stand and reached Kotagummam where the TDP workers burnt the effigy of the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. - Special Correspondent

Rajahmundry: The Bank of India, Rajahmundry branch, celebrated Farmers' Day on Tuesday on the eve of completing 36 years of Banks Nationalisation. Speaking on the occasion, Sarvaraya Sugars Limited Cane Manager S. Srinivasa Rao said that the banks had increased lending to the farm sector. He advised the farmers to repay the loans in time and get fresh loans.
