GK Motors FHC prevails over TNSP

MADURAI: GK Motors Finance Hockey Club, Madurai moved into the pre-quarterfinals of the 13th Rajamani-Kanagamaniammal Memorial Trophy State-level hockey tournament, prevailing over Tamil Nadu Special Police, Chennai 6-5 via tie-breaker here on Tuesday. At the end of regulation time, the teams were 1-1.

GK Motors struck early in the second half when Vaman deflected a neat pass from Ramdas into the net. Undaunted by the reverse, TNSP made some threatening forays and forced a penalty corner, which was converted by Aravind for the equaliser.

In the tie-breaker, A.P. Vinod, Karthik, Veeramani, Vaman and Maria John Paul scored for GK Motors. Krishnakumar, Muthupandi, Selvam and Palani scored for the Police team. GK Motors goalkeeper Netaji brought off a fine save off Pradeep's attempt to give GK Motors victory.

Two penalty corner conversions by Muthukrishnan and another goal by Michael off a fine pass from Muthukrishnan helped Port Trust Sports Club, Chennai defeat host Reserve Line Sports Club 3-0 and enter the pre-quarterfinals.

In another match, Food Corporation of India, Chennai beat Netaji Hockey Club, Kovilpatti 2-1 to make the pre-quarterfinals.

Incidentally, all the goals came through penalty corner conversions. Vijayakumar gave FCI the lead in the 18th minute. Murthy found the equaliser in the 51st. But, Monty scored the winning goal two minutes later for FCI.

The results: GK Motors 6 (Vaman; tie-breaker A.P. Vinod, Karthik, Veeramani, Vaman, Maria John Paul) beat TNSP 5 (Aravind; tie-breaker Krishnakumar, Muthupandi, Selvam, Palani).

Port Trust Sports Club, Chennai 3 (Muthukrishnan 2, Michael) beat Reserve Line Sports Club 0.

Food Corporation of India, Chennai 2 (Vijayakumar, Monty) beat Netaji Hockey Club, Kovilpatti 1 (Murthy). — Sports Correspondent
