Joint venture for maintaining Russian defence equipment

Sandeep Dikshit

Steady supply of spares through warehousing at reasonable prices will be ensured

NEW DELHI: In the first case of a major private partnership between Indian and overseas companies in the defence sector, eight Russian manufacturers and vendors of defence equipment have set up a joint venture with an Indian company to maintain equipment supplied by them to the Indian armed forces.

The joint venture, Rosoboronservice (India), is staffed almost entirely with ex-service men who had handled and maintained this equipment. A private partnership between the Indian company, Krasny Marine Services Private Ltd., and foreign companies, the venture will meet the long-standing demand of the Indian armed forces for steady supply of spares at reasonable prices for equipment sourced from countries of the erstwhile Soviet Union. Apart from Karsny Marine, the Russian companies are: Rosoboronexport, Avrora Corporation, Granit, Meridian, Altair, Salut, Tactical Missile Corporation, and Electropribor. The board of directors of the joint venture comprises heads of all the promoter companies.

The new venture has signed agreements with Baltysky Zavod (builder of Talwar class frigates), Northern Design Bureau (designers of Talwar class ships), Sevmash (refitters of Gorshkov), Zvezdochka (refit of Kilo class submarines), Kamov (helicopters), Kumertau (designers of helicopters), Rubin (designer of Kilo and Amur submarines) and Central Research Institute for Ship Repair Technology.

According to the joint venture's Managing Director, V. G. Jayaprakasan, Rosoboronservice (India) was incorporated as an Indian company.
