Monsoon gathers steam in U.P.

Rain lashes many places in Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab

LUCKNOWCHANDIGARH: Monsoon gathered steam in east Uttar Pradesh with most places experiencing heavy rainfall or thundershowers in the last 24 hours.

According to the met office here on Tuesday, heavy rainfall was reported at isolated places in Gorakhpur, Varanasi and Faizabad divisions and at many places in rest U.P. divisions.

Met Director R K Verma told UNI that the monsoon would further intensify and remain active till the normal date of September 30. Kakardhari received the maximum rainfall of 233 mm, followed by Kakarhi 117, Bhinga 104, Etawah 75 and Shardanagar 65.

Meanwhile, the Ganga continued to rise at Mirzapur, Varanasi, Ghazipur and Ballia, while the Yamuna followed the trend at Mathura and Naini. Gomti also swelled at Neemsar and Jaunpur, while the water level of Ghagra, Rapti and Mandak rivers was rising at several places.

The State Capital experienced a few spells of rainfall during the period and recorded a maximum temperature of 31 degrees Celsius and a humidity level of 80 per cent.

In the next 48 hours, heavy rainfall and thundershowers is likely at many places in north Uttar Pradesh and a few places in south Uttar Pradesh.

LUCKNOWCHANDIGARH: Rain pounded most parts of north-west India with some areas recording heavy downpour in the last 24 hours.

Many areas in Himachal Pradesh experienced moderate to heavy rain till Tuesday morning. Sujanpur Tira was the wettest place in the State, recording 41.2 mm rain, followed by Guler 33.5 mm, Pandoh 20 mm and Nagrota Surian 19.5 mm.

State Capital Shimla recorded 10.7 mm rain while Bhang-Manali and Solang nullah in Kullu district measured 7 mm and 3.2 mm rainfall respectively.

Hissar with 14.5 mm rain was the wettest place in Haryana while Ambala recorded 0.4 mm rainfall.

In Punjab, where the monsoon remained suppressed, rain lashed certain areas with Amritsar registering 2.8 mm rainfall and Madhopur 14 mm rain.

Several areas in Jammu region of Jammu and Kashmir were pounded by moderate rain. The State's winter Capital Jammu recorded 24.2 mm rain while Basauli reported 13.2 mm rainfall.

Chandigarh Union Territory had sharp monsoon showers during the day, turning the weather sultry. The city recorded 89 per cent humidity.

Moderate to heavy rain or thundershowers will occur at many places in Haryana, Himchal Pradesh and Punjab during the next 24 hours. -- UNI
