MYSORE: Officials of the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) demolished several shops that encroached on the footpath in Vivekananda Nagar and Ramakrishna Nagar on Tuesday morning even as a few shop owners began to dismantle some shops. However, the demolition drive was later halted owing to the intervention of councillors and residents of the area. The officials who started the demolition spree on Nrupatunga Road in Kuvempunagar and Vivekananda Nagar Main Road removed several illegal structures. The drive started the drive early in the morning following a decision taken by the corporation council to remove illegal structures as part of the beautification drive in the city. The councillors, Nagendra and Mahesh, intervened and argued that the corporation is biased towards the Chamaraja Assembly Constituency. They alleged that officials are not removing illegal structures in N.R. Constituency because of opposition by shop owners. A heated exchange of words between officials and the councillors. The demolition drive was halted temporarily and officials allowed shop owners to remove the encroachments by dismantling their shops. Sources in the corporation said that the drive has only been temporarily stopped as shop owners have sought time till July 23 to remove the encroachments.
