MYSORE: The All India Democratic Students Union (AIDSO) has supported the introduction of English from first standard and said that the mother tongue should be the medium of instruction from primary classes. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, AIDSO office-bearers said that when a majority of the people want the introduction of English from first standard, it is unfortunate that a handful of writers and organisations are opposing the introduction of English. The AIDSO said the mother tongue should be the medium of instruction from the primary level and English should be taught as a language from class one as it helps people draw from all branches of knowledge. The union also urged the Government to introduce a pro-people ordinance or legislation to allot seats in professional courses on the basis of merit and fix a fee that is within the reach of the common man. It said thousands of meritorious students and parents are in the lurch as the State Government has struck a deal with private professional college managements for the current academic year. Though the seat sharing on a 50:50 basis is being proclaimed as an achievement, the crux of the problem is the astronomical fee structure, which has been left unresolved. Referring to the Government's decision to open new medical colleges in the State, the AIDSO said the authorities should provide adequate infrastructure and facilities for the existing medical colleges before spending money to open new medical colleges.
