NEW DELHI: A first for Delhi University, this is one hostel on the North Campus that understands gender sensitivity only too well. Girls may be a late addition here, but with the new wing of the Ramjas hostel going the extra mile to ensure it has the woman's touch, the scales are for once tilted in favour of the fairer sex. From a modern smart card entry system that will provide extra security to a modern pantry complete with microwave, fridge and electric stove to help them cook for themselves in late hours, the Ramjas hostel's girls wing -- inaugurated on Monday -- is one that is made to order for the girls. "The lifestyle of girls is clearly different from that of the boys who are often indisciplined. We have tried to make sure that the hostel feels every bit like home with the girls getting a chance to live as comfortably as possibly,'' said Debraj Mookerji, Convenor of the College Discipline Committee. And the arrangements clearly add up to that. The hostel will have a laundry system fitted with three washing machines and a dryer where students will be able to wash clothes on the basis of a common schedule. Apart from the kitchen meant to prepare various meals for the students, an additional modern pantry will be a major highlight. "There are times when students do not make it for dinner on time, and since the girls' hostels have strict guidelines for the night, we decided to have a special arrangement whereby they can cook their own meal and stock confectionaries in the kitchen. We thought it may be something that the girls would like,'' Mr. Mookerji added. Ramjas is only the third college in the University to have hostel facilities for both girls and boys. The hostel has employed special staff to look after the girl's wing with a special order to clean the washrooms every 30 minutes. "My responsibility has increased manifold with the addition of this wing. We have to take special care of the girls now and all arrangements have been made in accordance to that,'' said the Ramjas College Principal, Rajender Prasad.
