Trans-Yamuna in for transformation

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Government has decided to strengthen the roads, flyovers and under bridges in the trans-Yamuna area to meet the quantum of traffic during the Commonwealth Games 2010. The repair work would be completed well before the events begin.

The State Urban Development and Public Works Department Minister, A.K. Walia, said on Tuesday that six flyovers, three under bridges and one cloverleaf were in the pipeline. "The Government has already initiated the proposals. It has been decided to speed up the pace and chalk out a time-bound programme," he added Hoping that work on all the projects would be expedited, Dr. Walia said effective coordination of different agencies was needed to ensure international standards.

Symposium on tumours

NEW DELHI: A one-day symposium on "Brain, Head and Neck Tumours" was organised by the Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre (RGCIRC) here over the weekend.

Delhi Finance Minister A.K. Walia, who was the chief guest, thanked RGCIRC for making available the latest IMRT technique to cancer patients in the country. He said there was a need to make available this new cancer treatment technique to poor patients and promised to allocate funds for procuring necessary equipment in three Delhi Government-run hospitals. More than 200 delegates from the country and abroad participated in the symposium.

Philosophy of Vedanta

NEW DELHI: The fourth Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Lecture was held at the India International Centre here this past week.

Delivering a lecture on "Vedanta and Social Justice", Rajya Sabha member Karan Singh said that conservatism and narrow approach was not possible while dwelling on the basic values of the philosophy of Vedanta that enshrined the presence of the Almighty in every human being.

Book released

NEW DELHI: A new book, "Governance Reforms for Vision India", was released by former Union Minister Jagmohan in the Capital on Monday.

The book has been written by B.P. Mathur, a former civil servant with the Indian Audit and Accounts Service.

Maths exhibition

NEW DELHI: Amity International School, Noida, held its annual maths exhibition, "Mathamity 2005'', over the weekend.

Conducted under the aegis of the Amity Centre for Excellence in Mathematics, the two-day symposium and exhibition was aimed at promoting high standards in mathematics.
