The decision will come into effect from August 1; checking-squad to be constituted

MANGALORE: Students who travel by buses operating to and from the city will no longer be able to travel at a concession from August 1. The Dakshina Kannada Bus Operators' Association has demanded that students use bus passes.

Bhaskar Salian, president of the association, said a delegation comprising members of the association have called on principals and headmasters of nearly 127 schools and colleges in and around the city in an effort to enlist their support for this move.

"We hope to convince students to travel using passes and also appeal to their parents to cooperate in this regard,'' he said.

The association has also decided to make arrangements to provide bus passes directly to educational institutions and to make it easy for students to obtain their passes.

Students have to pay for the bus pass at their institution and we will supply the renewed passes to them, he said.

The owners have enlisted the support of bus crew, including drivers and conductors, and asked them to insist that students use bus passes.

Many conductors collect fares, locally referred to as "concession rate" from students, which is illegal.

"We have conducted an awareness campaign at S.B.I Terminus on Tuesday in this regard," he said. He said bus owners have adopted a "soft attitude" towards students till now. Students will have to pay the full fare if found travelling without a valid bus passes from August 1, he added.

"We have decided to constitute a checking-squad from among our members.

They will decide on the next course of action, if students are found violating our request," he said.
