BANGALORE: Karnataka Water Resources and Transport Minister M. Mallikarjuna Kharge has again ruled out any release of Cauvery water from the Krishnarajasagar Reservoir. In reply to a clarification sought by Leader of the Opposition B.S. Yediyurappa and Vatal Nagaraj (Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha), Mr. Kharge said in a statement in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday that the present storage in the Cauvery Basin reservoirs in the State was low compared to the storage during the corresponding period last year. The surplus water in the Kabini reservoir was being released to Tamil Nadu. Mr. Kharge, apparently referring to the letter written by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, said there was no need for such a meeting. Karnataka had to safeguard the interests of the Cauvery Basin farmers.
