Sharp rise in cooking gas refill bookings

N. Ravi Kumar

CHENNAI: : Cooking gas refill bookings with the LPG distributors of national oil companies in the State witnessed a sharp increase on Tuesday, as the indefinite strike by the bulk LPG transporters entered the second day.

Describing this as a panic response of consumers, officials of the Indian Oil Corporation and the Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited said the strike was yet to have any impact on the supplies. The two companies, which command a sizeable share of the LPG market in Tamil Nadu, have stocks to meet two days' requirement of the bottling plants, they said.

A senior IOC official said there was no problem in the supplies from the bottling plant of the Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited, as it was part of the CPCL refinery. The IOC's Ennore bottling plant had stocks for two days. Even on Tuesday, some transporters moved the product from the CPCL to the Ennore plant.

Sources among Indane distributors confirmed that there was no disruption in their supplies from the oil company in the past two days. The refill bookings by the households, however, was relatively more in the two days, a distributor said. He estimated the increase at 200 more than the usual registrations for each distributor. In several cases, the consumers would not even be having an empty refill to give while taking delivery of the filled cylinder, the distributor said.
