DOUSING THE FIRE: The unreserved compartment of the Cheran Express, which caught fire near Irugur on Tuesday.
CHENNAI: Traffic on the Coimbatore-Erode section was suspended as a precautionary measure following a fire in the Cheran Express early on Tuesday. Trains were delayed by two-four hours. Officials of the Revenue and Police Departments, Fire and Rescue Services and the railways rushed to the scene. P.K. Sen, Commissioner of Railway Safety, Southern Circle, Bangalore, would conduct a statutory inquiry at 10 a.m. on Thursday at Coimbatore Junction. Railway officials, who visited the site, said the fire was not due to any electrical short-circuit, as the power supply equipment were found in good condition. The police suspected that it was a case of suicide. Southern Railway General Manager Thomas Varghese directed Additional General Manager, R. Gopinathan Nair, Chief Security Officer, M.C. Murali, Chief Rolling Stock Engineer V. Carmelus and Inspector General of Police (Railways) T. Radhakrishnan rushed to the spot immediately. A railway release said the services were normalised within an hour. The damage caused to the railway property was estimated at Rs. 25 lakhs.
