Crackdown on traffic violators

Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE: The City Police will adopt "zero tolerance" towards even minor violation of road rules to bring in discipline on the roads, City Police Commissioner Karan Singha said on Tuesday.

The Police Commissioner made this observation at a function organised at the City Police Office to accept a Rs. 1.5-lakh costing sophisticated speed radar gun, made in China, donated by the Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL).

The printout from the gun is admissible as evidence in a court of law. Regional Manager of BPCL P. Ananda Sundaresan and Territory Manager R. Somasundaram handed over the gadget to the Commissioner.

Decrease in fatal accidents

The Commissioner told presspersons that the number of fatal accidents had come down due to the stepped up drive against drunken-driving and over-speeding. The number of fatal accidents, which stood at 460 in 2001, had come down to 356 in 2002, 336 in 2003 and 346 in 2004.The City Police as part of their stepped up drive against drunken-driving had so far booked 5,291 cases. For violation of parking rules, the police had so far towed away 15,000 vehicles and on Monday, removed 162 vehicles in a bid to ensure smooth traffic flow. During raids conducted on Monday against driving of vehicles without valid licence by school students, the police detected 31 such cases and a sum of Rs. 15,500 was collected as fine from them, Mr. Singha said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Headquarters), V. Karuppasamy and Assistant Commissioner of Police (Intelligence), Rathinasabathy appealed to corporate houses and associations of trade and industry to donate breath analysers and speed radar guns to strengthen the City Police.
