Warning issued to private nursing colleges

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Minister for Medical Education, Iqbal Ansari, on Tuesday gave a mild warning to the promoters of nursing colleges mushrooming across the State that they may be derecognised if they fail to provide at least 75 per cent of the required infrastructure.

Replying to Umashri and Jalaja Naik from the Congress in the Legislative Council during question hour, the Minister said private nursing colleges do not pay any money to the Government. He said that there is a demand for two lakh nurses in the United States and the Government will create awareness about it in the rural areas. Candidates from the State should be given priority in admission to nursing colleges, he added.

Mr. Ansari said that there are 160 private nursing colleges in Bangalore and 30 per cent of the seats are under the government quota. The Government is thinking of increasing it to 50 per cent so that more number of seats can be allotted to reserved categories.

The Minister told Prabhakar B. Kore that a committee constituted by the High Court has recommended that the Karnataka Institute of Mental Health, Dharwad, should be given autonomy. The recommendation is being implemented, he added. A new building for outpatients and inpatients has been built at a cost of Rs. 7 crores.

The Minister for Primary Education, Ramalinga Reddy, said he has directed officials of the Department of Public Instruction to check if the managements of private educational institutions are providing infrastructure such as classrooms, toilets, drinking water and learning materials to students.

He said if lapses are found, the schools may be derecognised.
