Four killed in mishaps

Muzaffarnagar: Four persons, including a `kawariya' pilgrim were killed in separate mishaps in the district today, police said.

The `kawariya' died when he fell from the roof of a train in which 60 pilgrims from Mathura were travelling to Hardwar, police said. In another incident, a ninth standard student was crushed to death by a bus near Khatoli, police said adding, in the same area, a man was electrocuted to death at his workshop. One person was killed when he was knocked down by a bus in Kotwali police station area, police added.

Body found

Shimla: The body of a woman was found from a hotel room in Shimla town today. Police said they were searching for the man who had checked in with the woman, claiming to be his sister-in-law Vimla Devi, last night and went missing from the hotel. The body was found under the double bed of the room at around 11-30 am, police said.

Boy rescued

Jaunpur: A police team have rescued from the Anguli village here a six-year-old boy abducted from Agra on June 12. SP Abhay Kumar Prasad said here today that Sunny was abducted from his house in Sikandara locality of Agra on June 12 by a former tenant in his house Rajnish Yadav.

The kidnappers, including Yadav and three others later demanded Rs. 5 lakhs as ransom from Sunny's father Rajvir Singh. The police, however, nabbed all four kidnappers -- Yadav, Hariprasad, Pritam and Mohar Singh -- on July 17, who disclosed that Sunny had been taken away by one Jhagru Kewat of Anguli village of Jaunpur district.

Acting quickly on this information, a joint police team from Agra and Jaunpur raided Kewat's house in Anguli village last night and rescued Sunny unhurt. The police are on a lookout for the absconding Kewat.

Drug peddlers arrested

Jamshedpur: Police seized about six pounds of heroine worth about Rs 1.8 crores in the international market from Ulidih police station area here today. Acting on a tip-off, police arrested four drug peddlers along with the contraband items.

Undertrial escapes

Muzaffarnagar: An undertrial has escaped from police custody in the Muzaffrangar district court here. SSP Amrendra Senger said here today that Dharmendra Singh, a notorious criminal, was brought in police custody with three other criminals to be produced before court yesterday, but managed to escape. Two policemen Baleram and Ram Manohar Singh, who had taken the criminals in their custody, have been sent to lines for negligence of duty.

Officials transferred

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has affected a minor reshuffle in the administration transferring five IAS officers, including Entertainment Tax Commissioner Mohan Swaroop and Special Secretary, General Administration, Hiramani Singh Yadav, official sources said here today.

Swaroop has been made the District Magistrate of Varanasi while Singh Yadav has been posted as DM of Mau, they said.

Land Acquisition Director, Revenue Council, Prabhu Dayal Srivastava has been made the DM of Kushinagar while DM of Baghpat Ajay Chauhan has been shifted to Pilibhit in the similar capacity, sources said. Arvind Kumar, awaiting posting, has been made the Commissioner, Gorakhpur Division, they added.
