23 athletes for Ukraine

NEW DELHI: A batch of 23 athletes and five coaches will leave here for Kiev, Ukraine, in the early hours of Thursday for a month-long training camp in preparation for the Asian athletics championships to be held in Korea in September.

Originally, 25 athletes were named for the training programme, but discus thrower Neelam J. Singh and 400m runner P. S. Sreejith are not among those scheduled to leave on Thursday. Neelam is expected to leave after a few days while Sreejith's plans were not immediately known. Anil Kumar Rohil had replaced K. Suresh from the original list.

The stint in Ukraine_at Koncha Zaspa, near Kiev, for the throwers and at Kharkov for the runners_was to have lasted 45 days, but with visa-related problems delaying the team's departure, the stay will now be for just over a month.

The squad: Men: Anil Kumar, Piyush Kumar, Vishal Saxena, Jagdish Basak, H. Jayachandran, B. G. Nagraj, Sandeep Sarkaria and Vilas Neelgund (100m, 200m); Satbir Singh, Bhupinder Singh, Saji P. S., Anil Kumar Rohil, T. Aboobacker and P. Shanker (400m); Navpreet Singh and Ranvijay Singh (shot put).

Women: S. Geetha, Chitra K. Soman, Manjeet Kaur, Rajwinder Kaur, Iyleen Samantha, S. Anbu Vimala and Bindu Rani (400m).

Coaches: N. Ramesh, Parminder Singh, Suresh Kumar Saini, Jaswant Singh and Jagbir Singh. — Special Correspondent
