THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In what is suspected to be a case of mistaken identity, the Central Prison authorities here are facing an inquiry on the charge that they wrongly reported the death of an undertrial prisoner to his family. According to prison department officials, Anil Kumar (Under Trial Prisoner number: 7372) of Vilapilsala was admitted to the Medical College Hospital (MCH) on July 9 morning after he was found "unconscious" in one of the cells. The prisoner died at the hospital the same evening. The next day the relatives of another under trial prisoner, Rajeev of Haripadu (Under Trial Prisoner number 7273) got an intimation from the Central jail authorities informing that Rajeev had died of illness.
Body cremated
Rajeev's brother Rajesh took custody of the body from the MCH on July 10 after it was subjected to inquest and post-mortem examination in the presence of the Revenue Divisional Officer. The body was cremated at Rajeev's residence in Haripadu.
Protest
According to officials, the case came to light when Rajeev raised a protest in the prison after he came to know of the incident. Subsequently, it was revealed that the death of Anil Kumar had been wrongly reported as that of Rajeev, an official said. The prisons department has ordered a full inquiry into the incident.
