dated July 22, 1955: Riots in Saigon

The British Prime Minister, Sir Anthony Eden, and the Soviet Foreign Minister, Mr. Molotov, who were Co-Chairmen of last year's Geneva Conference, have been requested by the Government of India to consider the situation arising from the rioting in Saigon on July 20 and to issue the necessary directions to the parties. An official spokesman, disclosing this in New Delhi on July 21, said that this action was taken on receipt of a report from Mr. M.J. Desai, Chairman of the International Commission in Viet Nam, about the rioting. Immediately after the incidents occurred in Saigon on July 20, the International Commission met and passed a unanimous resolution, which was also transmitted by the Government of India to the two Co-Chairmen at the Commission's request. Meanwhile, considerable concern has been expressed in New Delhi over these disturbances which seem to have been organised to wreck the Commission and therefore the whole Geneva agreement. Rioting anti-Communists in Saigon stormed through two hotels, wrecking the rooms occupied by members of the Indo-China Truce Control Commission.
