Call it globalisation, modernisation or restructuring, there is increasing pressure on various organisations whether in the public sector or the private sector. Giving autonomy to various entities is one of the policies pursued by the governments. The Pollution Control Boards in various States are understood to be converted into self-supporting bodies. This would mean that the income generated by the respective PCBs would be utilised within the respective States. The implication is that States such as Kerala would be losers. Kerala has fewer industries in comparison with other States. The lesser revenue would mean more difficulty in realising self-sufficiency. The thickly populated State does not offer much scope for wider industrialisation. Going by the present accounts, the neighbouring Tamil Nadu earns 10 times the revenue. The concern was echoed at a meeting organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry on Thursday.
