They create beauty in sand. Anil Plankala and Udayan Russelpuram have, between them, displayed 20-odd paintings done in multi-coloured sand at the Museum auditorium. The duo have also exhibited sand portraits of prominent leaders as well as striking replicas of famous Ravi Varma paintings. Disciples of Nemom Krishnan Nair, a noted sand-painter, the artists said the major advantage of this natural medium is that the colour never fades. The sand was collected from places like Kovalam, Kazhakkuttam, Veli, Chavara in Kollam, and Kanyakumari, among other places. The portrait of V.S. was done in black mineral sand collected from Chavara, the scene of the agitation against mineral sand-mining. The CPI(M) leader, who inaugurated the show on Wednesday, was gifted the portrait by the artists.
