No respite in tree felling

Even as the social forestry celebration Vanolsavam 2005 held under the joint aegis of the Forest Department and the district panchayat got underway here on Thursday, there has not been any respite in cutting down trees in the urban areas, at least in this part of the State.

Tree felling is being allowed to satisfy the construction lobby in the district, it is alleged. And the fact is that most of these trees are axed down for giving a facelift to multi-storeyed complexes being built in the urban landscape.

Some environmental organisations constituted "Vriskha Samrakshana Samithy" in Kanhangad to resist the cutting down of trees in and around Kanhangad and Hosdurg regions. But, it is yet to be seen how far the samithy could resist the pressure put up by the building lobby on the civic administration and local bodies.
