The primary task of a municipality is to provide civic amenities and infrastructure facilities for its citizens. Providing sanitation and drainage facilities to keep the town clean and waste free is of utmost importance. But what the Palakkad Municipality does is to collect waste from different wards and dump it on the sides of the bypass road. It has become difficult for the people to live in the area, as also a problem for pedestrians and vehicle passing through. The waste from the Big Bazaar market is dumped at the Pattikkara bypass. The waste from the Municipal Bus Stand area is dumped in front of the Veterinary Hospital, near the Moyan Girls School, and that from other parts of the town on both the sides of the Kalmandapam-Kalpathy bypass. The municipality has no solid waste management plant and the dumping of waste inside the town has transformed the entire municipal area into a `waste box,' endangering the health of the people.
