KOCHI: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Thursday expressed the hope that the Government would pay attention to various suggestions made by a committee of secretaries on reforming the present system of preparation and printing of SSLC question papers and take remedial measures at the earliest. The Bench, comprising Chief Justice Rajeev Gupta and Justice K.S. Radhakrishan, made the observation while disposing of a writ petition filed by P.V. Raju, secretary, Teachers Forum to Save Education. The petitioners sought a directive to the State Government to use hi-tech methods for preparation and printing of SSLC question papers. The recommendations of the committee, headed by the Chief Secretary, were approved by the Chief Minister and Education Minister.
Teachers' constituency
A Bench comprising Justice M. Ramachandran and Justice S.Siri Jagan held that only lecturers whose appointments had been approved by the Syndicate could be included in the voters' list for election to the Senate from the teachers' constituency. The court made the observation while disposing of a batch of writ petitions filed by teachers in self-financing colleges seeking a directive to Calicut University to include their names in the voters' list. The court pointed out that the statutes of Calicut University stipulated that teachers whose appointment had been approved by the Syndicate could only be included in the electoral rolls .
Minimum wage petition
Justice C.N. Ramachandran Nair has dismissed a writ petition filed by Gas Agency Owners' Association against the Government Order fixing minimum wages for workers in the agency. The All-Kerala Gas Agencies Thozhilali Union (CITU), which had been impleaded in the writ petition, opposed the writ petition. The minimum wage had been fixed in 1999.
Acquitted
A Bench comprising Justice K. Padmanabhan Nair and Justice V. Ramkumar acquitted Sekharan who had been awarded death sentence for raping an 11-year-old girl. The death sentence was awarded by the Additional Sessions Judge (Adhoc), Kalpatta.
