A. Punitha Rathinam
IT IS a rare privilege to be bestowed on a lass from the Vadipatti block in Madurai district. She is among three girls below 14 years who have been chosen to attend the 2005 Children's Summit for Environment at Aichi, Japan, from July 26 to 29. The other two girls hail from North India. Studying in Standard VIII of T.V. Sundaram Iyengar Higher Secondary School in Madurai, A. Punitha Rathinam will present a paper on `eco-schools' at the summit. The summit is a global event, which aims at facilitating an understanding of environmental issues and drive home the message of a clean and vibrant environment for the coming generations. She qualified as a participant after she wrote an essay on `eco-schools.' Her driving force is her father, S. Azhagesan, secretary, Centre for Rural Education and Development (CRED), Vadipatti, who launched the `Clean Madurai' campaign about a year ago. The `eco-school' concept originated from the campaign. Punitha presented her views on how environment-friendly a school should be in her paper, which was submitted through an e-mail. Based on this, she has been invited to present a paper on the subject.
