CHENNAI: "I am a violinist by profession who works for 14 hours. Do I have to exercise to avoid diabetes?" "A cricketer recently said he was a diabetic. How can a physically active person be affected with diabetes?" These were some of the questions from the audience eager to know everything about diabetes on Tuesday. The 20-minute interaction with V. Mohan, diabetologist and chairman of Dr. Mohan's M.V. Diabetes Specialities Centre formed a part of the launch of One Touch Diabetes Education Centre at Johnson and Johnson, Teynampet. Dr. Mohan said people must give priority to exercise or walking in their daily schedule. About the cricketer, he said he had type I diabetes, which occurred in people who lacked immune mechanism. The cause was not related to diet or lack of exercise. Dr. Mohan inaugurated the One Touch Diabetes Education Centre of Life Scan, Johnson and Johnson medical division.
Up-to-date information
The centre is equipped with a conference room, a library and a gallery, and has a dietician. It aims to provide up-to-date information on diabetes. Doctors can hold seminars on diabetes and patient education programmes in the conference room. A diabetes educator-cum-dietician would be available to provide advice on diabetes. The centre can be visited for its collection of books and videos on diabetic management.
The centre at Johnson and Johnson, 499, Anna Salai, Teynampet also offers help through phone. For details, contact V. Arthi, One Touch Diabetes Education Centre, Ph: 55543000.
