Talent promotion exam

CHENNAI: The State-level National Talent Promotion Scheme Examination will be held on November 27 in all district headquarters.

Students who have passed standards VII/VIII at least three or two years prior to appearing for the examination are eligible to apply, a release from the Director of Government Examinations said. Candidates must have obtained 40 per cent marks in the qualifying examination and must be between 15 and 20 years of age as on July 1.

Those who have registered or intend to register as private candidates with the Board of School Examination or a State/National open school for standard X examination can apply. There are no domicile restrictions.

Application forms are available from August 10 from the regional offices of the Department of Government Examinations and all Chief Educational Officers, District Elementary Educational Officers, Inspectors of Anglo-Indian and Matriculation schools, Regional Director of Central Board of Secondary Education, Chennai, Regional offices of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Chennai or the Project Officer of Sarva Siksha Abhiyan.

Pension to freedom fighter

CHENNAI: V.S. Vedamani, a participant of the Quit India Movement, has been sanctioned the State Government's pension for freedom fighters.

An official release said here on Thursday that Vedamani, a resident of Chennai, had recently submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa stating he had undergone imprisonment during the British rule following his participation in a protest demonstration led by Sardar Vedaratnam Pillai before a police station in Vedaranyam in 1942. He pleaded for extending the freedom fighter's pension to him. Mr. Vedamani would get Rs. 3,000, besides medical allowance of Rs. 15 a month. — Special Correspondent

Migration of workers

CHENNAI: A recent study by a non-governmental organisation that the State topped in the number of workers migrating to foreign countries has proved the State Government's failure to increase employment opportunities in the State, said the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president, G.K. Vasan, here on Thursday.

According to the study of the 4.74 lakh migrant workers in the country about 1.08 lakh workers belonged to Tamil Nadu.

The reason for the high number of migrant workers from the State, he said was due to unemployment, poor wages and poverty.

Mr. Vasan said the State Government had not done any thing to improve employment opportunities. It was not cooperating with the Centre in implementing schemes that could generate employment. — Special Correspondent

Two depose in bus burning case

SALEM: Anbazhagan, then Special Branch constable, now working in the Anti-Naxalite Special Wing, who deposed the First Additional District Sessions judge, D. Krishnaraja, in the Dharmapuri bus burning case, said he and his friend, who happened to pass Ilakkiampatti in Dharmapuri found the burning bus. With the help of other students they attempted to save the girls who sought help from the bus. He identified those who took part in the road blockade at Ilakkiampatti.

Selvam, a trader, feigned ignorance about the blockade that took place 100 feet away from his shop.

He claimed that he did not see the bus burning. The judge posted the case for further hearing to July 26. — Special Correspondent

Dak adalat

ERODE: A dak adalat would be conducted at 11 a.m. on July 26 at the office of the Senior Superintendent of Post Offices on Gandhiji Road here. The public can submit or send their grievances on or before July 25 to the Senior Superintendent of Post Offices. - Staff Reporter

Government officials observe fast

ERODE: Demanding a charter of demands, the Government employees belonging to Tamil Nadu Government Employees Association observed a token fast on Thursday in front of the Erode Commercial Tax office. - Staff Reporter

Dyeing units closed

ERODE: On orders from the Pollution Control Board, six dyeing units in Sarkar Periyapalayam in Uthukuli block were closed on Thursday. Electricity was disconnected.

Of the 17 dyeing units in Sarkar Periyapalayam, along the border of Tirupur, 11 units have begun works to install treatment plants.

Farmer murdered

TIRUNELVELI: A farmer was found murdered in front of his house on Thursday.

Police said that the head of Petchimuthu (33) of Karisalkulam under was crushed when he was fast asleep. Since he had a dispute with his relative in the same area, the Panaivadalichathram police suspect that they might have murdered him. — Staff Reporter

RI for murder

Tuticorin: The District Sessions court here on Thursday sentenced Arumugasamy (41) to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for murdering Ramamoorthy (33) at Ottapidaram.

The case pertaining to the verdict occurred on March 9, 2004 when Arumugasamy murdered Ramamoorthy due to previous enmity.

Fishermen drowned

Tuticorin : A 31-year-old fisherman was drowned in the sea, about 20 km off Tuticorin coast on Thursday.

Police said Antony went in a motorised boat for fishing and he fell into the water accidentally while spreading nets. He got entwined in the nets and drowned.

Employees stage dharna

Tuticorin Members of the Tamil Nadu Government Employees Association staged a dharna in front of the Collectorate here on Thursday.

They urged the Government to merge 50 per cent of Dearness Allowance with basic pay, immediate reinstate dismissed road workers, time-scale provision for anganwadi workers and filling vacancies in various posts on a war footing, among other demands.

Govt. staff stage dharna

NAGAPATTINAM: A large number of Government employees belonging to Tamil Nadu Government Employees Association (TNGEA) staged a dharna near the bus stand here on Thursday to press their charter of demands.

Pudukottai

Members of the Tamil Nadu Government Employees' Association on Thursday staged a dharna at Thilagar Thidal on Thursday in support of their 18-point charter of demands.

Their demands, among other things, included filling up of posts lying vacant in various departments, appointment on compassionate grounds and withdrawal of ban on recruitment of new hands.

The district president of the Association, L. Prabakaran, led the agitation. — Staff Reporter

Control room set up

PUDUKOTTAI: A round-the-clock control room with telephone facility has been set up at the Collectorate here to meet any emergency during the ensuing monsoon, said the Collector, R. Thiagarajan.

Addressing an official meeting convened to work out precautionary steps here on Thursday, he said that members in need of any assistance could contact the telephone number 1077 set up at the control room. — Staff Reporter

Road works inspected

Pudukottai: The Collector, R. Thiagarajan, inspected the road works being executed through the DRDA in Aranthangi block to a length of 10.6 km at an outlay of Rs. 32.60 lakhs. He inspected the works at several villages including Perungadu, Nagudi, Periyalur and Rathinakottai.

The Collector also visited the school at Melmangalam where additional buildings were being constructed.

The Project Officer, DRDA, M. Madasamy was among those who were present. — Staff Reporter
