Seeks Prime Minister's intervention in ending LPG tanker operators' stir

CHENNAI: The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, on Thursday sought Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's intervention to end the nationwide strike of the Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) bulk tanker operators since July 18.

13 plants shut down

In a demi-official letter to Dr. Singh, she said "already in Tamil Nadu 13 out of 16 bottling plants have shut down today. This will cause a shut down in supply to domestic consumers in most areas in the State."

There were as many as 50 lakh domestic LPG connections in the State and these consumers were likely to be affected seriously, she said.

"It would appear that the issue relates to only contractual points between oil companies and the LPG bulk tanker operators. There is nothing that can be done at the State-level on this issue.

The Union Petroleum Ministry is in-charge of the matter and would need to evolve a quick solution," Ms. Jayalalithaa pointed out.

She pleaded for the Prime Minister's urgent intervention on the issue as it involved LPG supply to every household kitchen of a large number of domestic consumers.
