Two-day seminar on domestic violence inaugurated

Staff Correspondent

GULBARGA: Confusion, delay and high costs involved in the legal system make it difficult for women to approach courts in case of domestic violence, National Human Rights Commission member and former Supreme Court judge Shivraj Patil said here on Thursday.

Mr. Patil was inaugurating a two-day national seminar on Domestic Violence Bill 2005 at the Seth Shankar Lal Lahoti Law College.

Mr. Patil said social prejudices and fear of retaliation from in-laws deterred many women from seeking legal redressal. The Bill introduced in Parliament last year was not passed for want of support from some members. He hoped that the Bill will be passed this year. The Bill envisages larger role for the non-governmental organisations in solving the problem.

Mr. Patil urged the police and the judiciary to be pro-active and sensitive. He called for a change in the mindset of the people. "We should shed preconceived notions about the role of men and women in a family and the power equation," Mr. Patil said.

Conference organising secretary K.S. Bagale said the seminar is organised with the assistance provided by the UGC. Former MP, B.G. Jawali, and principal, S.S. Malipatil, were present.
