Government neglecting local bodies, says TDP

Rampant corruption in irrigation projects alleged

CUDDAPAH: The Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy Government is yet to devolve powers to local bodies, as it lacked commitment to empower them, the Hyderabad Mayor and TDP leader, Teegala Krishna Reddy, alleged on Thursday.

Congress leaders raised a hue and cry, while in the Opposition, that local bodies and panchayat raj institutions lacked autonomy, but initiated no steps to transfer powers to them on regaining power, he alleged at a press conference at Vempalle.

`Rampant corruption'

Alleging rampant corruption in irrigation projects taken up with a whopping outlay of Rs. 46,000 crores, Mr. Reddy alleged that the projects were mooted to benefit Congressmen and contractors, but not the people.

Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy's claims of establishing a `farmer's rule' and `Indiramma raj' proved to be false promises to regain power, he alleged.

Congress failed to fulfil electoral promises and lost public sympathy, he maintained. People realised that the nine-year TDP rule ensured their welfare, he asserted.

The TDP would bag the Cuddapah Municipal Corporation and five municipalities in Cuddapah district, he claimed.

Focus on unity

Mr. Krishna Reddy favoured a unified State, though he hailed from Telangana region.

He opposed bifurcation of the State on regional lines and wanted unity among the Telugu-speaking people.

The district TDP President, R. Ramesh Kumar Reddy, Pulivendula constituency in-charge, S.V. Satish Kumar Reddy, Vempalle mandal unit president, Subba Reddy, and Telugu Yuvatha mandal unit president, Premsagar Reddy, took part.

Later Mr. Krishna Reddy led a padayatra in the streets of Pulivendula town.

Debacle predicted

The State Government is holding indirect municipal elections, fearing a rout at the hustings, as it became scam-tainted, the Rajya Sabha member, Lal Jan Basha, alleged.

Addressing the Cuddapah town TDP executive meeting here, he called upon partymen to enlighten people on the scandals during Congress rule and ensure a Congress debacle in the civic polls.
