for trains

BANGALORE: To clear the waiting list, a three-tier second-class sleeper coach will be added to the following trains on Friday: Train No. 6526 Bangalore-Kanyakumari Express; Train No. 6221 Mysore-Chennai Cauvery Express; Train No. 0684 Bangalore-Chennai Special Express; Train No. 213 Mysore-Tirupati Fast Passenger; Train No. 6732 Mysore-Tutucorin Express and Train No. 6232 Mysore-Tanjore Express, according to a press release issued by the South Western Railway.

Grievances camp tomorrow

Bangalore: A public grievances camp pertaining to Bangalore Rural district will be held at the Central College cricket ground here on Saturday. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, will inaugurate the camp at 10.30 a.m. The Minister in charge of the district, P.G.R. Sindhia, will preside. The Deputy Commissioner of the district, J.V. Kongawad, has announced that 25 counters will be open that day to deal with the grievances of the people. A few Ministers and legislators will attend the camp. — Special Correspondent

List of Haj pilgrims approved

Bangalore: The Central Haj Committee (Mumbai) has approved the entire list of 5,646 pilgrims from the State who will be undertaking the Haj pilgrimage in 2006. The Minister for Labour and Wakfs, Tanvir Sait, noted that the quota fixed for Karnataka for Muslims undertaking the pilgrimage is 3,742. However, the Central Haj Committee has increased the quota by 1,904 taking the total to 5,646. — Special Correspondent

FM station sought for Shimoga

SHIMOGA: The Minister for Information and Publicity, B. Shivaram, has requested the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Jaipal Reddy, to provide FM broadcasting to the twin cities of Shimoga and Bhadravati. There is a Doordarshan Kendra in Shimoga and an Akashvani Kendra in Bhadravati and infrastructure is available, he said. Mr. Shivaram has made this request following a letter to him by the Minister for Housing and Minister in charge of the district, Anjana Murthy. — Special

Date for filing statements extended

BANGALORE: The last date for filing statements, affidavits to the A.J. Sadashiva Commission set up to probe the hooch tragedies in Nelamangala taluk of Bangalore district and Sakleshpur taluk in Hassan district has been extended to August 31. Persons, associations, authorities acquainted with the subject matter of inquiry can furnish the details in triplicate along with documents, if any, to the Secretary, A.J. New Delhi: The Sangeet Natak Akademi on Thursday mourned the death of the eminent Kannada theatre activist K.V. Subbanna. "With the demise of Subbanna, Indian theatre has lost an outstanding personality,'' the Akademi said in a condolence message here. — PTI

Kodava serial to be made

Madikeri: The Kannada film director A.T. Raghu will start shooting a Kodava serial, "Thamane,'' in August, Mr. Raghu said at a press conference here on Thursday. He said many portions of the serial will be shot in various locales in Kodagu district. Neravanda Umesh and Shweta Chengappa will play the main roles. The serial is estimated to cost Rs. 20 lakhs. Mr. Reghu said there is no encouragement to produce Kodava films or serials in the absence of sponsorship. This has come in the way of producing Kodava films and serials. Mr. Umesh, who is a co-producer, was present. — Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: The Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) will organise an interactive radio counselling programme for its students from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on July 24. The Chairperson, Department of Studies in Urdu, KSOU, Jahan Ara Begum, will provide counselling on "II BA language - Nazara Darmian Hai" from 4 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. on July 24. Senior lecturer K.J. Animals adopted

MYSORE: A peacock of the Mysore zoo has been adopted for one year from July 5 by the Zoo Authority of Karnataka Benevolent Fund by paying Rs. 3,000 as adoption fee. Similarly, 11 members of Rotary Mysore Midtown have adopted 11 lovebirds for one year from July 18 by paying Rs. 500 each. — Staff Correspondent

Man held on charges of stealing mobile phones

BHADRAVATI: Ravi, a resident of Hosamane extension in Old Town here, was arrested by police on Tuesday on charges of stealing mobile phones in the city and Bangalore and selling them to others.

He was produced before a court, which remanded him in judicial custody. Six mobile phones valued at over Rs. 16,000 were recovered from him. — Correspondent

Appointment of Urdu teachers

HASSAN: The Azad Tippu Sangharsha Samiti has urged the Vice-Chancellors of various universities to fill the vacant posts of Urdu lecturers by appointing part time lecturers. The president of the samiti, Mubbashir Ahmad, in a release on Thursday, said it is necessary to fill the vacant posts in view of the problems being faced by the students.

Plea on SC reservation

CHITRADURGA : The district unit of the Karnataka Madiga Meesalathi Horata Samithi has urged the Government to classify the reservation under Scheduled Castes (SC) based on the population. The samithi has asked the Government to specify the quantum of reservation for the sub-castes within SCs, for which 18 per cent reservation already exists.
