COIMBATORE: : Joseph Chakola made the cut in his maiden appearance in the Boyd Quaich inter-university golf championship being played over the old and new courses at St. Andrews, Scotland, according to information received here. Starting his first round on the new course, the Delhi-based Chakola shot a 10 over 82 to be joint 24th and a four over 76 on the old course moved him up on the leader-board to make the cut with the top 30 players at the end of the second round. Team-mate Anirudh Goyal, who was placed joint 30th with a total of 163, missed the cut on a count back. The Scottish weather was surprisingly pleasant for the four days of the Open but then came the typical winds blowing over 30 mph. "The boys are playing in conditions far worse than the open," pointed out tournament director, Martin Farrally. Facing a stiff challenge from players across the globe and local conditions that are alien to them, the duo handled it all with absolute ease. The scores have also not been very low considering the weather. A two over 74 by four of the players has been the best score on the new course and a solitary one over 73 has been the best score on the old course. The 30 players will play the last two rounds again on both the new and old courses. For the record, this is the first time that an Indian university team is being represented in this prestigious tournament. Sports Reporter
