Ropeway at Chamundi Hills in 18 months

MYSORE: Tourism in Mysore will be more exciting in future. For, the sound and light show at the Mysore Palace will be ready for public viewing by this Dasara festival, and work on a ropeway at the Chamundi Hills will commence next month. It will be ready in 18 months.

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, the Tourism Commissioner, Mahendra Jain, said the authorities will soon finalise a date for the foundation stone laying ceremony of the ropeway. The project is estimated to cost Rs. 6 crores.

The access to the ropeway will be provided from Nanjangud Road. Sikka, a Bangalore-based agency, has been given 18 months to complete the project. The ropeway will be built and operated by Sikka.

Orders have been placed for machinery and equipment for the ropeway, he said. He said the contract for the ropeway work was given to the agency a few years ago.

The Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) had handed over land to Sikka to set up a base station for the ropeway.

On the sound and light show at the Mysore Palace, Mr. Jain said lighting equipment and control panels have been procured and civil works are on.

Mr. Jain said under the Destination Development Project, the State Government will shortly receive Rs. 8.80 crores for tourism development in Mysore. A project report has been submitted to the Centre.

He said night bazaars will be established at Bannimantap and recreation parks at Nishad Bagh, the Kukkarahalli Lake and Dalvoy Lake. Welcome arches will be built at three gateways to Mysore. The environs of the Jaganmohana Palace Art Gallery will be beautified with cobbled stones.

He said conservation architects from Oxford Archaeology Department have provided ideas for the Mysore Destination Development Project.

While a roadmap may have to be developed to improve the heritage character of Mysore, the U.K.-based architects have submitted a proposal to develop a heritage plan for the city. They have evinced interest in working together with the local experts.

Mr. Jain said the State Tourism Department is confident of securing funds from the Centre under the Destination Development Project.

Kodagu and Chitradurga districts received funds under the project last year.

Earlier, Mr. Jain took charge as the Commissioner for Archaeology, Museums and Heritage.
