More engineering colleges after study

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government will permit more self-financing engineering colleges in the State only after a fresh evaluation of the demand for seats, Education Minister E.T. Mohammed Basheer said on Thursday. Replying to the discussion on a motion to refer the Bill amending the existing Act governing the self-financing colleges to the Subject Committee of the Assembly, Mr. Basheer said the Government had changed its policy to accord no-objection certificates to all managements that wished to start professional colleges. In the case of B.Ed. colleges also, the Government would not issue no-objection certificates until a fresh survey of the demand for seats was made. In both cases, the indication was that there were sufficient seats already for the students, he added. — Special Correspondent

SETO protest

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Employees and Teachers Organisations (SETO) has described as unjustifiable the failure on the part of the Pay Commission to keep its word to submit the report to enable the Government to sanction interim relief to the Government employees and teachers before July 10. The State committee of the organisation, which met here on Thursday with its convener K. Sudevan in the chair, suspected that it was part of a move to delay the pay revision. It demanded the Government's immediate intervention on the issue. — Special Correspondent

Road development work

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The work on the four-laning of the Cherthala-Thiruvananthapruam stretch of NH 47 is expected to begin in September 2006 and be completed by September 2009.

Public Works Minister M.K. Munir said here on Thursday that the detailed project report of the Rs.1200-crore project would be ready by March 2006 and the tender formalities completed within six months. He said the final clearance for the project, which involved four laning of 187 km of road, had been given by the Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry. The land for the project was already available. The preparation of the detailed project for the development of NH 17 was in progress. The land for it was being acquired under the fast track system. — Special Correspondent

Curbs on cattle movement to stay

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Although there were reports that anthrax outbreak in parts of Tamil Nadu had subsided, the curbs on movement of cattle into Kerala would remain in force for some more time. Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Minister K.R. Gouri told the Assembly on Thursday that the Government thought it better to keep the curbs in place for some more time to avert any possible outbreak of the dreaded disease in the State. It had lifted the curbs on movement of milk and milk products on the basis of information from Tamil Nadu that there was let up in the spread of the disease, she said. — Special Correspondent

MALAPPURAM: Malappuram Institute of Entrepreneurial Development (MIED), district panchayat-sponsored venture, has invited application for its low-cost food technology courses. Three-month courses are being offered in fruit and vegetable preservation, bakery and confectionary, ready mix and instant foods, among others. Application forms and prospectus can be had from the MIED office on Jubilee Road, Uphill, Malappuram, on payment of Rs.10. The last date to submit the application is July 30, said an official press note here. — Staff Reporter

TIRUR: Antique artefacts were discovered during an excavation at the Kodakkal Tile Factory compound at Tirunavaya, near here, on Wednesday. Ancient earthen pots and a metal sword were found in a cave during the excavation for a building. — Staff Reporter
