MADIKERI: The Deputy Commissioner, Subodh Yadav, took officials and staff of the Department of Tourism here to task for the tardy progress achieved in developing tourism in the district. Presiding over a meeting on developing tourism in the district, he wondered how progress could be achieved when most of the officers of the Department have been transferred from the district. He said that huge sums had been released as grants to develop tourism in Kodagu in the recent times, according to a press release. Discussions also centred around improving tourism by departments other than the tourism such as the zilla panchayat and the gram panchayats. Mr. Yadav asked officials of the zilla panchayat to provide a proper platform for viewing the Abbi Falls, near here, and entrust the task of maintaining cleanliness of the picnic spot to the gram panchayat, which collected parking fee from the vehicles of visitors. The KSRTC Depot Manager was told to introduce Grameena Sarige bus services from the city to the Abbi Falls as also to the Nagarahole National Park, via Gonicoppa. A decision was also taken to train people as tourist guides to provide the right information on tourist places to people visiting the district.
