Long, long wait for reward

NEW DELHI: An 80-year-old man has been waiting for the past 13years for payment of a reward from the Income-Tax Department for helping it book an alleged smuggler and tax evader.

According to Prem Chand Gupta, way back in May 1992 he had prepared a dossier on the activities of the smuggler and sent it to the then Chief Justice who had referred it to the Central Bureau of Investigation for a probe.

After perusing the file, the investigating agency had sent it to the Income Tax Department, where someone kept it pending, Mr. Gupta alleged.

On the basis of the papers made available to the Union Ministry of Finance, the then Finance Minister, Manmohan Singh, had also instructed the Department to pay the reward, which came to around Rs. 24 lakhs, Mr. Gupta claimed.

Later, he knocked at the doors of the Supreme Court, which also passed orders in his favour. The payment had not been made till date, he said.
