Parties given time till August 12

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: As the war of words between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress over division of boundaries and Assembly constituencies under the ongoing delimitation process intensifies, the Delimitation Commission has asked all stakeholders to file their proposals by August 12. All the objections pertaining to the proposals are to be submitted by August 7.

The Delhi BJP had raised a hue and cry over the manner in which the Delimitation Commission assisted by the State Election Commission had re-drawn the Assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies of Delhi. It had charged the State Election Commissioner, S.P. Marwah, with working as an election agent of the Congress party and had sought a review of the present proposals. It is learnt that at the meeting held on Thursday, the Delimitation Commission decided to give some extra time to various parties to file their final proposals and also objections if any. From the Congress side the meeting was attended by the former Minister and Member of Parliament, Ajay Maken; Education Minister, Arvinder Singh Lovely; Member of Parliament from Outer Delhi, Sajjan Kumar; Karol Bagh MP, Krishna Tirath; and Nationalist Congress Party MLA, Ramvir Singh Bidhuri. The South Delhi MP, Vijay Kumar Malhotra, and Tilak Nagar MLA, O. P. Babbar, represented the BJP.

The proposals have raised a lot of dust in political circles as the circulated draft indicates that a large number of constituencies could have their polling booths and geographical boundaries altered affecting the political fortunes of many bigwigs.
