RECALLING A SAVANT: Students at the Shriram Elocution contest on Tirukkural.
CHENNAI: It was certainly out of the ordinary event. Hundreds of school and college students in Chennai took part in an elocution contest on Thirukkural. The Shriram elocution contest evoked an overwhelming response with over 517 students from the city and nearby districts participating in the two-month State-wide contest held for school and college students in Tamil Nadu. The contest was organised by the Shriram Ilakkiya Kazhagam, a part of the Shriram companies group. The first phase of the competition was held at Dr. MGR-Janaki College for Women, Chennai, last week. The number of participants was a record for an elocution contest, organisers claimed. In all 229 students participated in the junior-level (Std 6, 7 & 8) category. In this category, M. Tamil Poonkuyil Mozhi of Velammal International School bagged the first prize and J. M. Jacob from Marian Matric Hr. Sec. School won the second prize. In senior-level (Std. 9,10,11 &12), L. Gomathy of Padhippaga Chemmal K. Ganapathy Govt. Hr. Sec. School won the first prize and the second prize by N. Hamathul Hai of Marian Matric Hr. Sec. School. A total of 236 students participated at this level. At the college level, 52 students participated. The first prize was awarded to S. Jameela Beegam of M.S.A.J. College of Nursing and V. Somaiah of Venkateswara College of Engineering won the second prize. Popular orator Bharathi Bhaskar handed over the prizes and congratulated the winners. R. Rukmani, Principal, Dr. MGR-Janaki College for Women, was the guest of honour. R. Kannan, Director, Shriram Group, and Mr. Anbu Selvam, its Executive Director, and the college secretary, Latha Rajendran, were among the participants
