CHENNAI: For the first time in a regular court, an auto-rickshaw driver whose rash driving killed a cyclist was sentenced to one-year rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs. 4,500 within six days of the incident. A police press release said last week, 27-year-old Ganesan, who was driving an auto rickshaw, hit Munirathinam, 68, on S.N. Chetty Road, Kasimedu. Munirathinam died of head injuries before reaching hospital. A complaint was filed the same day. On July 18, inspector J. Gnanaraj Nelson of the Kasimedu Traffic investigation arrested Ganesan, who was remanded to judicial custody.
Detained under Goondas Act
The Greater Chennai Police Commissioner, R. Nataraj, ordered the detention of two persons under the Goondas Act on the charges of felling and selling off a sandalwood tree in the Theosphical Society's campus in Adyar. A police release said Kandasamy and Shanmugam, who were working in the Society, were found to have been involved in felling sandalwood trees on earlier occasions too.
Auto driver praised
A 38-year-old auto-rickshaw driver of north Chennai has won accolades from the police Commissioner, R. Nataraj, for his honesty. The driver, R. Parthasarathy, of West Thanikachalam Nagar, Madhvaram, had approached the Commissionerate seeking help to locate the owner of a 4-1/2 sovereign gold `thali' chain found in his vehicle. Investigation showed that the chain had been snatched from a woman within the Flower Bazaar police limits. The Commissioner lauded the auto-rickshaw driver for his honesty.
