CHENNAI:
The response from cardholders of Chennai to receive their new cards was poor compared to their counterparts in other parts of the State.
During the last three week-ends only 51.25 per cent of cardholders in the city received the new cards. Of 13.99 lakh cards printed for Chennai south and north districts, only 7.17 lakh cards had been distributed, according to official sources. Madurai and Karur are the other two districts where less than 60 per cent of cards had been distributed.
Out of 30 districts, nearly 80 per cent of the cards had been distributed in Namakkal, Theni and Tiruvarur districts. In 17 districts, more than 70 per cent of the cardholders received the new cards and over 60 per cent in seven districts.
The sources said another 30 lakh cards would be distributed in the coming week-end (July 23 and 24). The cardholders who failed to receive the cards on days prescribed for them could get them on July 30 and 31.
They promised that new cards would be distributed to all genuine cardholders who had given their application at the time of renewal.
The cardholders were given time till September to receive their new cards in place of the old ones, he said.
