CHENNAI: In a surprising twist to the medical admissions, at least 31 students in the "Open competition" and "Backward Classes" categories failed to show up for counselling during the first two days. Going by the details available on the official website, analyst Jayaprakash Gandhi says two students called for counselling on the first day and 29 on the second day, meant for Backward classes, have not responded. "It is a new development students turning away from medicine. Last year only eight students did not turn up for counselling and this year the competition was much more intense," Mr. Gandhi explains. On Wednesday, 430 students and six others with "Revaluation marks" were called for counselling and 426 seats were allotted. Eight `OC'students were given waiting list allotments. On Thursday, 425 students and six revaluation candidates were invited, with 383 seats getting filled up and 19 BC candidates put on the wait list. The following are the cut off marks for the Open competition and Backward classes for the three medical colleges in Chennai: Madras Medical 298.83 (for OC) and 298.33 (BC); Stanley Medical 298 and 297.67; Kilpauk Medical 297.58 and 297.25. Mr. Gandhi pointed to the "narrow gap" in the cut off marks between the two categories and said 37 forward community students had secured admission this year. The final cut off for `OC' seats was 296.92 and for `BC' 294.75 marks. Friday's counselling will be for the Most Backward Classes22
