`Vani Kala Sudhakara' title conferred on 16 artistes

Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha lauded for nurturing Carnatic music

CHENNAI: : Sri Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha conferred the title "Vani Kala Sudhakara" on 16 eminent artistes on the occasion of its diamond jubilee celebrations on Thursday.

D.K.Pattammal, B.Rajam Iyer, M.Balamuralikrishna, Nookala Chinna Sathyanarayana, N.Ramani, Parur M.S.Anatharaman, Umayalpuram K.Sivaraman, T.H.Vinayakram, Srirangam Kannan, R.Pitchumani Iyer, Mayavaram G.Somasundaram, R.S.Manohar, Cho S.Ramaswamy, Padma Subramaniam, Haridwaramangalam A.K.Palanivel and Madurai M.P.N.Ponnusamy were given a citation, a memento and a cash prize of Rs. 5000.

The chairman of the Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, Coimbatore Kendra, B.K.Krishnaraja Vanavarayar, who conferred the title on the artistes, praised the sabha for its efforts to preserve Carnatic music in its pristine form for the last 60 years. He said there would be no danger to the age-old arts of the country and they would continue to enlighten people for centuries to come. Indian arts had more relevance now, as through them one could influence the minds of the people. They would help unite people and bring peace.

Inaugurating the jubilee celebrations, veteran actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao described the awardees as an asset to the country. By honouring the artistes, rasikas were only honouring themselves. Recalling the efforts of the late Chittoor V.Nagayya in constructing the sabha, he said the jubilee celebration was a fitting tribute to him.

Industrialist P.Obul Reddy, who distributed special awards to eight other artistes, congratulated the sabha for its impressive record of activities. He said its service to the cause of Carnatic music was a great achievement.

Industrialist Nalli Kuppuswamy Chetty released a souvenir and was received by film producer M.Saravanan and M. Murali of Sri Krishna Sweets.
