IN REVERENCE: Devotees throng the Sai Baba temple in Punjagutta in Hyderabad on Thursday to offer special pooja on the occasion of Gurupournami.

HYDERABAD: Gurupournami, one of the most important festivals on the Hindu calendar, when teachers and elders are revered with gifts and special pujas in temples offered, was celebrated with zeal in the twin cities on Thursday.

Rush at temples

Temples were teeming with the devout, particularly Sai Baba temples at Dilsukhnagar, Punjagutta, Chaderghat, Minister Road and Padmaraonagar. Discourses on the Bhagavad Gita and programmes were organised to felicitate elders and teachers on the full moon day. Disciples chanting the immortal lines - "Gururbrahmaa gururvishnuh gururdevo maheswarah; Guru saakshaat parabrahma tasmai shrigurave namah" - assembled at the Jal Vihar on the Necklace Road to seek the blessings of prominent gurus of various performing arts like Nookala Chinna Satyanarayana, Yella Venkateshwara Rao, Malladi Chandrasekhara Sastry and danseuse Shobha Naidu.

Jala Vihar director, G. Kishan Rao, said the programme, attended by people from all walks of life, was organised to venerate the passing on of tradition from the guru to the future generation. "We have to take the rich traditions forward and what better way than honouring the gurus who have been doing it all their life," he said.

A communiqué from the Annamacharya Bhavana Vahini said the day was celebrated at Annamayyapuram with `Annamayya Guru Smaranam' at the Annamayya Sadanam here. Several dignitaries, including the music director, R.P. Patnaik, were present.
