Plea to streamline examination system Students in city colleges enter a new academic year with two major requests to the authorities concerned at the Mahatma Gandhi University. They want their examinations to be held on time and results published without delay. These two issues continue to trouble students, as they fear that their career would be affected due to the delay in conduct of examinations. Despite several complaints, the university has not yet been able to implement a professional mechanism for its examination system, feel students and parents. "There are occasions where results are delayed for months. This becomes a problem for students, especially for those who want to join higher studies," says Manoj, a postgraduate student. Though most of the higher learning centres offer time for submitting the certificates, it leaves a bad impression about the university where we have studied, he adds. Parents are equally worried. They are asking for more concrete steps from the university authorities for streamlining the examination system. "The university prepares a timetable, but fails to stick to it. Top priority should be given to conduct the examinations on time. Results should also be published without any delay," says Mathew Joseph, a Central Government employee. A section of the teaching community also points out the lack of professionalism in the existing examination system in the university. A senior faculty member of an engineering college says that frequent changes made to the examination calendar finally lead to a complete breakdown in the examination system. "Most of the leading universities outside States like Tamil Nadu make it a point not to make any changes to the examination calendar prepared before the commencement of an academic year," he adds. The university authorities point out that a combination of factors work against their effort to streamline the examination system.
