KOCHI: A major expansion programme has been chalked out for the District General Hospital with a new out-patient block to come up facing the Subash Park. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will lay the foundation stone at a function at the General Hospital at 10 a.m. on Saturday. K.K. Ramachandran, Minister for Health, will preside. The new block is being built at a cost of Rs.1 crore, of which Rs.70 lakhs will be contributed under the MLA fund of K.V. Thomas and Rs.30 lakh by Ludy Luiz. The new block, to be built in three floors, will have a total area of 20,000 square feet. It envisages bringing all the out-patient departments spread over many places into a single building along with casualty facility. There will also be facility for patients to take rest while waiting to see the doctors. The Regional Diagnostic Centre, built earlier with aid from the Union Ministry, will also start functioning from Saturday, when Dominic Presentation, Minister for Fisheries and Sports, will formally inaugurate the facility. A high-tech ambulance equipped with a ventilator, defibrilator, central oxygen and a collapsible stretcher will be inaugurated by V.K. Ebrahim Kunju, Minister for Industries. A neurosurgery department at the hospital will also be formally inaugurated by Kochi Mayor Dinesh Mani during the function. A new psychiatry ward will also start functioning in the hospital. It will also have a teenage clinic and de-addiction ward. A new building for the Dhanwanthari Society will also be set up as part of the expansion plan. This building housing the medical store, canteen and the general store will be built with Rs.15 lakhs from the MP's fund. Sebastian Paul, MP, will lay the foundation stone of this building.
